Project Nr 7: Tilt Out Garbage Bin, Part 1

In order to clean out a part of my utility room, I want to make a tilt out garbage bin. First I took apart 2 Epal-Pallets and used 4,5x4,5 wood to make a frame.

The pallets were not in a bad shape, but needed a first sanding anyway. I used a 80grit sanding disk on my angle grinder. Quick and easy cleaning ;-)

Lovely Belgian weather made me stop due to the rain...

Project Nr6: Valentines Cutting Board

To Surprise my girlfriend I decided to try to fabricate a cuttingboard, with a valentines print on it. Since it was a little bit busy past day, I upload this all at once today.
I started off with a combination of left over pieces of wood, cutting them at about the same length, and arranging the pieces in a nice order.

Gluing the pieces together and let it dry for a while. The bottles say: dry in 20min, but I took a couple of hours to be sure it sticks together very well.

Cleaning it up and cutting the edges didn't a lot of time. Since the pieces were not all of the same thinkness, I needed to flatten the board. My router did a very nice job. I used my cirular saw miter box to do the job. It worked out very well, but it's not that handy. I'll make a flattening jig for my router one of these days.

It start to look like a real fine board! Sanding with 80grit, cleaning with a with towel, 100grit and cleaning... Rounding the edges with the roundover bit... seems like the real deal! Some more sanding with 150 and 240 grit, cleaning with water in between passes and white spirit before the last pass to make dust and fat free before adding the ingravings ;-)

The real deal!

I wanted to mark the date and my callsign with a soldour iron and use a print for the drawing. As I didn't want to damage it in this stage I proceeded very carefully! First I burned the date and sign in the board and did a last sanding with 240grit, very gently...

To put the drawing on, I used a mirrored copy of a stencil I made myself, and then ironed on the cutting board. Since I had no experience with this technique, and I only saw it on youtube, I proceded very very very carefully! The picture went on rather well, and it has a vintage look. The only problem was that due to the temperature of the iron, some of the glue started to melt and came out of the joining edges of the board. Lesson learned... So there is a little damage, but since this cutting board is only going to be used for decorative purpose, it is not a very big deal.

The result after finishing it with woodturners-oil, to make it look a bit more shiny ;-)

First cutting board ever! I hope my girlfriend likes it...

Project Nr5: First steps into woodburning

I want to personlise Wolf his feeding box. The way woodburning marks can be used to engrave different kind of texts looks like something to try out. Just with an example printed on a paper, using a small soldering iron will to the trick!

First transfering the drawing from the paper on the wood, than marking the outlines with a pencil and filling in the lettres with the soldering iron. Not the fastest way to do it, but seems like a nice result after all.

For his name I tried to mark the lettres with a sharp object first, and set the outlines with the point of the soldering iron. The only thing still need to do is colouring them in. But that will be for another day. It was allready way past bedtime at this stage...

Project Nr4: testing the new Jig

After assambling the new Jig, I had to try it out on the feeding box. Looks promising.

The plunge depth was just not deep enough, so I had to perform a little jigsaw magic to cut the circles out of the board. But it turned out very nice.

A simple pass with the roundover bit to make a smooth edge...

Fits like a charm!

Project Nr4: assembly of the router jig

The feeding fox will be the same as my first one. The beggest difference will be the holes for the water and food bowls. (and maybe the finish as well 😉)
The purpose of this little jig is to be able to route circles that are smaller then the baseplate of my router... It's a a first try, hope it will work out fine.

It looks a little bigger than necessary, but I'll be able to route different sizes of circles without changing the jig. I'm going to try it out somewhere this week and upload the results as soon as possible.

Project Nr4: Feeding Box Nr 2, new jig for my router

After making the first feeding Box I needed some kind of Jig for my router to be able to cut smaller circles. The second box is for at my girlfriends place ;-)
I started off with cutting the boards to lenght, gluing and screwing them togethter.

Just as I finished the first corner, there was a call for the fire departement, so I had to leave erverything like is was and run...

Project Nr 3: Feeding box for Wolf Phase 3

After putting on a second layer and letting it dry overnight I put the bowls in the feeding box. Ready to put to work!

Looks like he likes it!

This was not that difficult after all. I think I'm gonne make one more to put at my girlfriends home, in case we (Wolf and I) stay over there for the weekends.

Project Nr 3: feeding box for my dog, Phase 2

I decided to finish the box anyway. Considering it to be a prototype ;-)

For the finish on the wood, I used butchers oil. The same oil is used on cutting boards in your kitchen.

Probably, I'll put an extra finishing touch on it somewhere this week. (little busy...)

Poor Wolf... ;-) observing and waiting to try out his new feeding box.

Project Nr 3: Feeding box for my dog, Phase 1

Probably seen my hallway in previous posts? Result of Wolf spilling water and food by kicking his bowls over from time to time...

I want to make a box just like this:

Finding the right pieces of wood wasn't really a problem. Just routing the hole...
Since I wanted to use my router to make a round edged circular hole to fit the bowls, I tought I could use the compass that was delivered with the router. Since the diameter of the hole is smaller than the diameter of the baseplate of my router, I had a little technical issue.
No experience with a router at all, I tried to "eye-ball" it, following a drawn cirle on the top blade of the box...
